Island Heritage Gallery

Lyman Museum, Hilo, Hawaii

Island Heritage Gallery traces Hawaii’s rich multi-cultural history through time, chronicling the people and events that shaped Hawai’i as we know it today. The Gallery showcases the Museum’s fine archaeological and ethnographic collection supported by extensive interpretive graphics and audio-visual presentations. The Gallery creates a visual context for each era through the use of historic photo-murals and the art of legendary Hawaiian master Herb Kane.

From the Sea We Came conveys the evolution of Hawaiian culture from the arrival of the Polynesians and their adaptation to the natural resources.

Agents of Change describes the impact on the Hawaiian culture as Explorers, Whalers and Missionaries discovered the Islands.

The Plantation Era chronicles the effects of immigration upon the cultural, social and economic landscape of Hawaii.

Monarchy to Statehood outlines the changes in Hawaii’s political system beginning with the overthrow of the monarchy, through annexation, World War II and statehood.

Hawaiian Renaissance addresses the resurgence of Native Hawaiian culture in education, language, music, dance, crafts and sailing.

Kipuka provides hands-on activities for children in traditional Hawaiian crafts like knot tying, mat weaving, tattoo, hula, music, petroglyph marking and kappa making.

The Gallery is currently in the final stages of installation.

Earth Heritage Gallery tells the story of the volcanic emergence of the Islands from the Pacific Ocean, and the evolution of life on these young land masses. Visitors experience the habitats of Hawaii as they appeared before humans arrived.

IdeaForm generated the original concept design for Earth Heritage Gallery and assisted in the final design and production of several exhibit key exhibit elements including all of the interpretive graphic panels
